The Eurodyssey Insurance – Accidents, civil liability, health emergencies, repatriation
An insurance policy covering personal accident, civil liability, health emergencies, hospitalisation and repatriation is provided and financed for all Eurodyssey trainees.
The insurance is covered by the Assembly of European Regions (AER).
European Health Insurance Card
For traineeships taking place in the European Union, it is mandatory for the trainees to carry their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), provided by their national health insurance provider, for the entire duration of their traineeship. Trainees who hold the EHIC can access health care services in the destination region and in any other EU country, under the same conditions and at the same cost as people insured in that country. Trainees are advised to check what kind of medical costs are covered (or even free) in their destination region under the EHIC. In the EU, from one country to another, it might be free, or covered, or reimbursed, or not covered. For example, private health care / clinics are often not covered, so make sure to prioritise public / state-provided health services: they are the ones covered by the EHIC, not the private system.
HOW TO USE THE EHIC BY COUNTRY
/!\ If you don’t have the EHIC, if your Eurodyssey traineeship takes place in a country where the EHIC does not apply (outside of the EU), or if you are coming from a country not issuing the EHIC (outside of the EU), you must subscribe to a private health insurance, covering you for the entire duration of your traineeship. You will still benefit from the Eurodyssey international insurance, but when it comes to health, the Eurodyssey insurance covers emergencies (not planned treatments or routine consultations at a doctor’s for example).
How to request the EHIC?
You need to request your EHIC to your national health insurance provider / social security system. Usually, you can request it by logging in through your online space in your country’s dedicated health insurance / social security official website. If you are under your parents’ health insurance, they have to request it for you. For example:
- If you are coming from Belgium: you can request your EHIC from your mutualité.
- If you are coming from Spain: you can request your EHIC from your online space on the Seguridad Social website.
- If you are coming from Portugal: you can request your EHIC from your online space on the Segurança Social website.
- If you are coming from Italy: you can request your EHIC from the Ministero della Salute / Tessera Sanitaria.
- If you are coming from Romania: you can request your EHIC from your organismul de asigurări de sănătate de care aparțineți.
- If you are coming from Cyprus: you can request your EHIC from the Ministry of Health.
- If you are coming from France: you can request your EHIC from your online space on Ameli.
- If you are coming from Ireland: you can request your EHIC from the Health Service Executive (HSE).
Social security contributions
Social security contributions / taxes may be collected from the traineeship’s stipend / salary, and may be declared in your origin and/or destination region. This will depend on the traineeship regulation in the region. See Regions traineeship conditions for more information. Your contact persons in both regions will also inform you about the procedure to declare your traineeship’s remuneration to the tax authorities, if such obligation applies.
Important (if applicable): before going abroad to work, trainees are responsible for obtaining information from their home region about the procedures for reintegration into the social security system at the end of the traineeship or work placement.
