Personal and Social Skills

1. Safety-Mindedness & Responsibility
In scuba diving, professional attitudes are very important. You need to demonstrate:
Situational Awareness: The ability to stay calm and monitor your surroundings, your buddy, and your air supply simultaneously.
Discipline: Strictly following safety protocols and dive tables without cutting corners.
2. Teamwork & Communication (The "Buddy System")
Marine biology is rarely a solo sport.
Cooperation: Working seamlessly with a dive buddy or research team in challenging conditions (low visibility, currents).
Non-Verbal Communication: Proficiency in underwater hand signals and the ability to interpret a teammate’s body language or stress levels.
Cross-Cultural Collaboration: Eurodisseia is about exchange; you must be open to working with people from different backgrounds and adapting to different work cultures.
3. Adaptability & Resilience
Fieldwork is unpredictable.
Flexibility: Being okay with plans changing last minute due to weather, boat issues, or equipment failure.
Physical & Mental Stamina: Staying positive during long days on a boat, repeated heavy lifting, or tedious data entry tasks.
4. Environmental Stewardship & Ethics
As a representative of a marine program, you are an ambassador for the ocean.
Ethical Conduct: Showing deep respect for marine life (e.g., never touching organisms or "chasing" animals for a better photo).
Advocacy: A genuine passion for sharing conservation messages with the public or tourists in a non-judgmental, educational way.
5. Intercultural Sensitivity
Since Eurodisseia focuses on regional development and mobility:
Language Curiosity: A proactive effort to learn the local language, even if the "science" is done in English.
Open-mindedness: Respecting local customs and the specific ways coastal communities interact with the sea (e.g., local fishing traditions).
6. Observation & Attention to Detail
Scientific Precision: The patience to count tiny invertebrates or spot camouflaged species that others might miss.
Detail-Oriented: Ensuring data sheets are filled out accurately while still "narc'd" or cold underwater.
